I’ve come a long way and my title gives a glimpse of who I am today: Architect by Training, Mother by Choice, Creator of Strawesome by Pure Passion. This is the real-life
story of how I got that title!
I graduated with honors from the University of Detroit Mercy’s
School of Architecture program in 2000. I had achieved a
huge goal in my life and was happy to be moving on into the
corporate world. If you had told me on the day I graduated
that in sixteen years I would have my own business and be a
successful glass artist, I would’ve given you a very skeptical
look. Glass has little to do with architecture, and I hadn’t taken
a single business course throughout my education. Honestly,
looking back I didn’t really think I’d be cut out to have my own
architecture firm. It turns out that architecture wasn’t really
my main passion. It’s amazing that I didn’t discover this in five
years of college!
After working in the architecture field for about four years, I
quit my job and started my own interior painting business.
After a year of tiresome physical labor, I went back to my old
job and was there for another year before I became pregnant
with our first son. With his impending birth I felt a strong desire to stay home and care for him, and so I followed my heart
and left my position as an architectural designer. At the time
our son Adam was born in early 2005, my husband decided to
leave his long-term secure job and start his own information
